Lyons, Iowa, in 1868 was a river town on the west bank of the Mississippi in Clinton County, in the years when lumber from the upper Mississippi pine forests was the region's great commercial business. Log rafts and sawmills tied the riverfront to the lumber trade, and steamboats carried timber, grain, and goods up and down the river. The railroads were reshaping that trade as well, since the Chicago and North Western and other lines were pushing across Iowa and tying river towns to markets farther east. Lyons was a separate municipality until it was absorbed into neighboring Clinton in 1857, so by 1868 the town's residents still thought of their streets, churches, and wharves as a community of its own. This 1868 view records that riverfront world at a moment of rapid growth, just before the railroad and the timber trade changed the Mississippi towns again.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Lyons, Iowa, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
