Des Moines in 1868 was a river city of roughly ten thousand people, and it had been Iowa's state capital only since 1857, when government moved west from Iowa City. The Des Moines and Raccoon rivers meet at the site, and the town grew up around the old Fort Des Moines, which the army had abandoned about two decades earlier. Railroads reached the town during the 1860s, linking farm country rich in grain and hogs to eastern markets, while coal from nearby mines fed local shops and homes. Its streets held state offices, churches, mills and brick storefronts, in a city beginning to see itself as more than a stop on the way west.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Des Moines, Iowa, drawn in 1868. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
