The caption on this glass negative places Theodore Roosevelt in the Palatine, but the record does not say which Palatine is meant, whether the Illinois village or the German region. The title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service, and no date is recorded, so the occasion remains uncertain. The agency photographed national figures and public events in the early twentieth century, and Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, appeared often in its files. The glass plate format gave photographers fine detail, though the fragile base means many such negatives have survived with cracks or emulsion loss.
