This glass negative from the Bain News Service is captioned with the names of Albert B. Cummins, the Republican senator from Iowa who led the party's progressive wing, and Theodore Roosevelt, whose own progressive campaigns pulled Republicans in similar directions during the 1910s. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information that the Bain service itself did not verify, so the pairing should be read with that in mind. Bain's pictures of this period, taken by a news agency working for newspapers, capture the quick, informal moments of political life in Washington and on the campaign trail, and this one belongs to that tradition.
