Roosevelt's tour of the Hôtel des Invalides, the Paris complex of military museums and the tomb of Napoleon, places this picture in his travels after leaving the presidency. He was in France in spring 1910, during a long European trip that followed his African safari, and Paris drew large crowds and official attention. The record does not give a date, and its title comes from unverified Bain News Service caption data, so the exact moment is uncertain. The glass negative still shows the formal reception such visits involved, with Roosevelt walking alongside the French general.
