A glass negative carries the title "Roosevelt in France," written by the Bain News Service on the negative or its caption card, though the library has not verified that label. The Bain agency photographed public figures and events from about 1900 to 1920, so the scene may reflect one of Theodore Roosevelt's trips abroad. His best-documented European visit came in 1910, after he left the presidency, when he toured Paris and gave a well-known address at the Sorbonne. With no date on the record, the specific occasion remains an open question.
