This text-only poster, dated 5 November 1914, lowers the minimum height for the regular army's infantry of the line to 5 feet 3 inches, with a required chest measurement of at least 34 1/2 inches and an age range of 19 to 38. Those figures show how recruiting standards shifted once Britain's volunteer rush had slowed and the army needed more men for the front. The notice is a plain administrative document, but it records a practical turning point, when the army accepted shorter and younger-looking recruits than it had required at the start of the war.
