Drivers dozing in their carts on a Roman street give this view its character: the sleeping men, not the monuments, are the subject. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across Europe and the United States to record everyday scenes for sale as postcards and prints in the years before 1919. Its glass negative, a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, is now in the Library of Congress. Faint streaks and blemishes across the glass come from the coating breaking down over time, so they are part of the negative's physical history rather than errors in the scene.
