Two men pose with service flags in this February 17, 1926 glass negative, a picture from the National Photo Company's Washington studio. Hanford MacNider, a World War I veteran who had served as national commander of the American Legion, appears alongside Gen. H.E. Ely, and the banners recall the blue-star flags families hung in windows to mark relatives serving in the war. The studio's work from this period documented official and civic life in the capital, and the plate shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as the coatings on glass negatives deteriorate.
