Ouro Preto, the colonial gold-mining town in Minas Gerais, is the setting here, and the record pairs a hotel with building construction, which suggests work under way on a lodging place in a town of steep, cobbled streets. The photographer was G. E. Kidder Smith, an American architectural photographer who documented Brazilian buildings in the early 1940s. Ouro Preto's 18th-century churches and houses, built during the gold rush, had already drawn the attention of Brazilian preservationists and modernists, so even an everyday scene from the town carries that interest.
