The view centers on the gate of the Capitol grounds, where the inaugural procession passed on its way to the building. It belongs to March 4, 1861, when Abraham Lincoln rode with outgoing president James Buchanan along Pennsylvania Avenue to take the oath on the East Portico. The city was tense, with seven Southern states already seceded and armed troops posted in and around Washington for protection. Processions like this drew large crowds and gave the public a rare chance to see the new president in person.
