The Shrine of the Nativity in Bethlehem is shown here as David Roberts drew it on the spot in April 1839, during the lithographic tour of the Holy Land that made him one of the best-known topographical artists of his day. Louis Haghe turned Roberts's sketch into this color lithograph, which was issued in parts by F. G. Moon in London between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's travels in the Levant had a wide audience in Britain, and his views of sacred sites were prized by readers who could not make the journey themselves. The print is worth noticing for its careful rendering of the church's architecture as it stood in the nineteenth century.
