Roberts sketched this view of Bethlehem on April 6, 1839, during the Scottish painter's tour of the Levant, and the lithograph shows the town as it looked to a European traveler in that era. Louis Haghe, a Belgian-born lithographer working in London, turned Roberts's pencil drawing into a color plate that appeared in the second volume of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in parts between 1842 and 1845. Such prints were prized by Victorian readers who had never left home, and they helped shape a popular picture of the Holy Land as a place of biblical memory. The plate's date in its title records the day of the sketch, a detail that ties the finished image to a firsthand encounter rather than to imagination.
