Few places in Chicago suited a pastoral comedy better than Sylvan Dell, a wooded hollow in Jackson Park, where this c1893 photograph shows actors posed for *As You Like It*. Shakespeare's play unfolds largely in the Forest of Arden, so a staged woodland setting made natural sense. The date places the scene in the years when Jackson Park was being transformed for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, a period of unusually busy cultural life in the city. The caption card credits C.D. Arnold, and the question mark after "dress rehearsal" signals that the record itself is unsure whether this was a rehearsal or a performance.
