Few towns on the Atlantic coast changed as sharply as Nantucket, and this 1881 panoramic map captures the island just as its fortunes were shifting. Drawn in the bird's-eye style that J. J. Stoner and the lithographers Beck & Pauli of Milwaukee made popular, it presents the town from above, with streets, wharves and harbor laid out in close detail. In the mid-nineteenth century Nantucket was one of the world's leading whaling ports, but the decline of whaling and the rise of petroleum lamp oil left the island with a quieter economy by the 1880s, which makes such views especially useful to study.
