Provincetown sits at the outer tip of Cape Cod, so this bird's-eye view shows a town shaped by its harbor and the sea more than by inland roads. Drawn in 1877 by F. Kimball Rogers, one of the period's prominent panoramic map makers, it presents the town from an elevated angle that lets the viewer take in streets, wharves, and the surrounding water at once. By the 1870s Provincetown's economy rested largely on fishing, particularly cod, and on the shipping and boatbuilding that supported it. Maps like this one were commissioned by local interests as a record of community growth and a way to advertise it.
