Fall River's 1877 bird's-eye panorama shows a city built largely on cotton, with mill buildings and tall chimneys crowding the waterfront along the Taunton River. The view is drawn in perspective from an elevated vantage point, a format that let artists show streets, buildings and harbor on a single sheet. The credits name O. H. Bailey, the Boston view artist known for panoramas of New England towns, along with the lithographers J. Knauber & Co. and the C. H. Vogt firm. Maps like this were often sold to residents and businesses who wanted a detailed, flattering record of their growing city.
