Cape Cod's hooked outline and the island of Nantucket to its south are the features that set this map apart from broader views of the Massachusetts coast. By 1839 both places were already known to mariners, and Nantucket was a leading whaling port whose ships sailed to distant oceans. A reduced-scale map like this one would have been made for atlases, school use, or travelers who needed a compact guide to the shoals, harbors, and towns along the peninsula. Its small scale makes the sandy arm of the Cape and the island's position easy to compare at a glance.
