This map shows the Cape and Islands of Massachusetts, the hook of Cape Cod together with Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and the smaller islands around them, at a time when the region's coastal waters were a working landscape for pilots, fishermen, and navies. Dated 1778, it was drawn during the Revolutionary War, when British warships patrolled the New England coast and accurate soundings and shoal markings mattered for safe passage. The "reduced" in the title means this version was scaled down from a larger original, a common practice that made charts easier to copy, carry, and sell. Its fine coastal detail reflects how much the region depended on knowing its shifting sandbars and harbors.
