Drawn in 1778, this map of Rhode Island was made while the state sat at the center of the Revolutionary War in the North. British troops had held Newport since December 1776, and in August 1778 American forces under John Sullivan, joined by a French fleet, tried and failed to retake the island. Maps like this were valuable to commanders who needed to know the roads, harbors and channels of Narragansett Bay. The compact view also shows how much coastline and how many islands the small state packed into a limited space.
