An aerial perspective of Westerly, Rhode Island, drawn in 1911 by the firm Hughes & Bailey, shows the town from a bird's-eye angle that was popular for panoramic maps at the time. Westerly sits on the Pawcatuck River near the Connecticut border, and its mills, rail lines and harbor-side streets were central to its growth in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including its granite quarrying and textile industries. Panoramic views like this one were usually produced for civic pride and commercial promotion, so they show the town as its residents and businesses hoped it would be seen. Look closely at the labeled buildings and street grid, which record a community at the height of its industrial era.
