Mongolia is the only subject this glass negative names, and the title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its images, with no date or specific location given. Bain was a New York photo agency that supplied news pictures from about 1899 into the early 1930s, and its captions were often loose, so the label reflects an editor's understanding rather than verified fact. Mongolia was in upheaval during those years, having declared independence from the Qing dynasty in 1911 and becoming a people's republic in 1924, which makes the period worth weighing when considering the image.
