Catalogued under the name Oscar Seagle, this glass negative carries a identification that the Library of Congress notes is unverified, drawn from caption cards kept by the Bain News Service. Seagle was an American baritone and voice teacher who studied in Paris with Jean de Reszke and later ran a summer music colony at Schroon Lake, New York. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from around 1900 into the 1920s, made portraits of performers and public figures for newspapers, so the plate likely reflects that working press tradition. Its small glass format makes it a useful example of how the agency documented the era's public life.
