The name on this glass negative, Oscar II, points to a steamship, and the Bain News Service likely photographed it as a newsworthy vessel arriving at or leaving a New York pier. Oscar II belonged to the Scandinavian-American Line, which carried emigrants and travelers between Scandinavia and the United States in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a press photo agency active in New York from about 1900 to the 1920s, made pictures like this for newspapers that covered shipping, immigration and transatlantic travel. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact occasion is uncertain.
