This glass negative carries the name Capt. Ewald Hecker, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified information written on the negative or its caption card, so the identification should be treated as provisional. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, built from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with photographs in the early twentieth century. Bain's staff worked mainly with large glass plates, and their files document news events, notable people and everyday city life. Because the record gives no date, the image is best understood as part of that agency's broader work from roughly the 1900s through the 1920s.
