Few men in Washington during the First World War drew as much press as Capt. Karl Boy-Ed, the German naval attaché whose portrait this glass negative appears to preserve. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, produced images like this for daily publication. Boy-Ed served at the German embassy until late 1915, when American officials, responding to reports of sabotage and covert activity tied to his office, required his departure. The record gives no date for the exposure, and the identification comes from the agency's own unverified notes, so the picture is best read as a record of his public prominence.
