This glass negative records Capt. Leslie Cheape, a British Army officer whose name is taken from caption cards supplied by the Bain News Service. The archive gives no date, and the title is marked as unverified, so the identification rests on those original notes. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and its glass plates, made in small formats like this 5 x 7 inch negative, were often the only surviving record of the people it covered. Captain Cheape's service during the First World War would have placed him among the many British officers whose portraits circulated through such agencies.
