The only identifying detail this negative offers is a name and rank: a captain called Storer, a label the Bain News Service wrote on the glass or its caption card, though the record marks it as unverified. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York around 1899, and it sold news photographs to newspapers, so a portrait like this was likely made to accompany a story about someone in the news. The date is missing, so the occasion is uncertain, but glass negatives were a common medium in press photography of the early twentieth century.
