The caption names William Howard Taft and the town of Brookline, Massachusetts, but the Bain News Service that produced this glass negative recorded its titles from captions and cards that were not always checked, so the location and sitter should be treated as provisional. Taft, the 27th president, was a frequent subject of news photographers during his term from 1909 to 1913, when agencies like Bain's supplied pictures of public figures to newspapers across the country. Bain's collection is valued for capturing everyday scenes of that period, and the small-format plate reflects the fast, portable photography newspapers relied on at the time.
