This glass negative records former President William Howard Taft at a voter registration, a routine civic act that press photographers often staged for newspapers. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives or cards, and the record does not confirm the date or location, so the exact occasion is uncertain. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency in the early 1900s to supply pictures of public figures and events to newspapers, and its glass plates, like this one, capture the everyday mechanics of political life in that era. Taft, who served as president from 1909 to 1913 and later as Chief Justice of the United States, was a frequent subject of such images.
