This glass negative shows William Howard Taft boarding the *Mayflower*, the presidential yacht that carried chief executives on trips along the Potomac and up the coast. The record gives no date, but the caption points to Taft's presidency from 1909 to 1913, when the *Mayflower* was a regular symbol of the office. Bain News Service, the wire photo agency whose founder George Grantham Bain built this collection, sent such pictures to newspapers for quick publication, so the frame was made to be read at a glance. The unverified title and the missing date make the exact occasion uncertain, but the scene captures a routine ceremonial moment of official travel.
