The Mackay-Bennett, a cable ship that sailed from Halifax in April 1912, is closely tied to the Titanic's aftermath. Its crew recovered more than 300 bodies from the North Atlantic, and the grim work of identifying and preparing them fell to men who had never expected such a task. This portrait comes from the Bain News Service, and the record's title is unverified, so the men pictured are not confirmed by name. It offers a rare, formal view of the people behind one of the period's most sobering maritime recoveries.
