Mrs. Clarence Mackay was the wife of a telegraph and cable executive whose family fortune came from the Comstock Lode silver mines. Clarence Mackay ran the Postal Telegraph and Commercial Cable companies, and he was the son of John William Mackay, the Nevada mining magnate. Society portraits like this one were a staple of the Bain News Service, which supplied New York newspapers with images of prominent families in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its name comes from the agency's own caption cards, so the sitter's identity is worth checking against other sources.
