Four named sitters, a general and three women, set this glass negative from the Bain News Service apart from many portraits in the collection. The record credits Gen. T.H. Barry, Mrs. Lindley Garrison, Mrs. Barry and Mrs. G.F. Roe, but those names come from caption cards and have not been independently verified. Mrs. Lindley Garrison was the wife of Lindley Miller Garrison, who served as Secretary of War from 1913 to 1916, which suggests the sitters moved in Washington official and social circles. Bain's photographers supplied pictures of public figures and their families to newspapers, and this group portrait reflects that working practice.
