The only name attached to this glass negative is Mrs. S.S. Sands, and that title comes from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote itself, so it has not been checked against other sources. George Grantham Bain started the agency in New York in 1899 to sell news photographs to newspapers, and over the next two decades it built a large store of portraits, events and street scenes. Small glass plates like this one, holding a single sitter, were a common working format of the period. The record gives no date, so the sitting can only be placed loosely within the agency's active years.
