The Cornell Varsity Crew is one of the rowing portraits in the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives or its cards, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the exact date and the identities of the oarsmen are unrecorded here. Racing crews like this one were a popular subject for news photographers of the period, when college rowing drew large crowds and regular press coverage. The glass plate format, small by modern standards, was the working medium of press photographers of that era.
