The Columbia Varsity Eight is the subject here, a rowing crew from Columbia University photographed on a glass negative that came out of the Bain News Service files. Bain's agency sold news pictures of athletes, parades and public events to newspapers in the early twentieth century, and rowing crews, with their long shells and matched oarsmen, were popular subjects for that kind of coverage. The record gives no exact date, so the picture is best read as a snapshot of collegiate rowing during the Bain years, when eight-oared racing drew large crowds and considerable press attention.
