Walter Damrosch, the German-born American conductor and composer, is the subject, and the word "Columbia" in the title is what sets this negative apart, though the record does not say whether it refers to Columbia University or something else. Damrosch led the New York Symphony Society for decades and later became a familiar radio voice, where his Music Appreciation Hour introduced schoolchildren across the country to orchestral music. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active from the late 1890s into the 1920s, made many portraits of public figures like him for newspapers.
