Barnard Girls" points to the students of Barnard College, the women's college affiliated with Columbia University in Manhattan, founded in 1889. The title comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, but the record marks it as unverified, so the exact students and occasion remain unknown. The picture survives as a glass negative, a fragile medium widely used for press and studio work before flexible film took over. Without a date, the scene is best placed in an era when women's colleges were broadening access to higher education in the United States.
