Daniel Sickles, the Union general who lost a leg at Gettysburg in 1863, died in the spring of 1914 at age 94, and this glass negative records the funeral that followed. Sickles also served as a New York congressman and as American minister to Spain, which made him one of the more colorful public figures of the late nineteenth century. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made the negative, and its date of May 8, 1914 comes from agency data that has not been independently verified. The picture is a reminder of how the Civil War generation was still being honored and mourned half a century after the war ended.
