Six thousand girls performing in unison is what sets this picture apart, a scale of group display that the Sokol movement made its trademark. Founded in 1862 in the Czech lands, Sokol, meaning "falcon," combined gymnastics with civic and national pride, and its mass public exercises, called slets, drew enormous crowds. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, distributed images like this one, though the caption's details, including the date, are unverified. The picture hints at how large the women's and girls' sections had become by the early twentieth century.
