What sets this negative apart is its title, which a cataloger assigned by comparison with a related Bain image rather than from a caption written at the time, so the record offers little beyond a subject of foreign goods in packages. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of glass negatives made by Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news and feature photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Glass plates of this size were a standard format for press and commercial work of that era, and pictures of imported cargo often document the trade moving through American ports and warehouses.
