This glass negative from the Bain News Service shows Rodman Wanamaker posed with Native American chiefs, a pairing that reflected his well-publicized interest in Indigenous culture. Wanamaker, a son of the Philadelphia merchant John Wanamaker, was a prominent sponsor of Native American commemorations and exhibitions in the early twentieth century. The Bain agency photographed many New York newsworthy figures and events during that period, and its records were often compiled from caption cards that were not always checked. The record does not give a date or occasion, so the exact setting and the identities of the chiefs remain unconfirmed.
