Columbia students from the class of 1909 posed in Zulu costumes, a detail that places the picture within the college stunt dress and minstrel-style performance common in that period. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, made the glass negative, which is now part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so the occasion is unknown. Costumes like these drew on racist stereotypes of Africans and African Americans, and they are worth viewing critically as evidence of how such imagery circulated among young men of the time.
