Penn's second varsity, the reserve squad of the University of Pennsylvania, is the subject of this glass negative, though the record does not name the sport or the year. The title comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency active from about 1900 to 1932, attached to its plates, so it has not been independently verified. Second varsity teams gave younger and less-favored players a chance to compete against other schools' reserves, and the agency's large-format glass negatives remain a useful record of early twentieth-century college athletics.
