Crew members of the North German Lloyd liner Grosse Kurfürst stand together in this glass negative, one of the Bain News Service pictures from the early 1900s. The Bain agency, a New York photo service that sold news pictures to newspapers, recorded the title from its own caption cards, and the record notes that the identification has not been independently verified, so the men cannot be named from this source. Grosse Kurfürst sailed the transatlantic run between German ports and New York, so the group most likely reflects the working life of a passenger liner's deck and service staff. Ship crews of this era were often photographed for publicity or for port authorities, which makes such portraits useful for studying shipboard uniforms and occupations.
