Two Spanish-born artists, the composer Enrique Granados and the bass Andrés de Segurola, appear together here rather than a single performer or stage. Granados was in New York in early 1916 for the Metropolitan Opera's staging of his opera *Goyescas*, and the Bain News Service, a commercial press photo agency, photographed many visiting musicians and public figures of that period. The record gives no date, so the sitting is best placed within that wider stream of New York celebrity portraits. The glass negative format is also worth noting, since it shows how the agency's images were made in the years before flexible film became common.
