Paid applause was the work of the claque, a group of hired audience members who clapped, cheered, and sometimes hissed on cue to steer how a performance was received. The practice was best known in 19th-century Parisian opera houses, where claque leaders sold seats and organized their groups. The record gives no date for this glass negative, but it comes from the Bain News Service, the New York press photo agency whose early 1900s pictures covered theater, politics, and daily life.
