Arthur Guiterman, the humorist and light-verse poet, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which the Library of Congress holds. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced and distributed news pictures of notable people and events in the early twentieth century, and its negatives were often captioned on cards that have since been separated from the plates. Guiterman was known for witty, rhymed verse that appeared in magazines and collections, so his portrait belongs to the agency's broader record of American writers and public figures. The record gives no date, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain.
