Mudros, on the Aegean island of Lemnos, is the setting here, and the caption links the harbor to French submarines and to a name recorded as Jaure Guibery. Mudros served as a major Allied base during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915 and 1916, when warships and supply vessels gathered in its sheltered anchorage. The Bain News Service, a New York press agency, distributed photographs like this one to newspapers, and its caption details were often gathered secondhand, so the spelling of the name and the vessel details deserve some caution.
